The estimated building date of this work situated in Erzurum is between the years 1270 and 1291 by commissions of Hiidavend Hande Hatun, daughter of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat 1st of Seljuks. It is the biggest medrese we have today that is left from Seljuk Period. It is also known as Hatuniye Medrese. Damaged during the wars, the medrese was renovated and converted into cannon foundry by orders of Murad 4th. Used as a foundry building until 1846, it was again converted back to a medrese and used as one until Republican Period. Buiit out of smooth cut stones, the medrese building is famous with its stone decorations and minarets and is opened to public to serve as a museum in 1942. |
