Galata Tower

Dated back to 1348, the Galata Tower is between Tunel and Karakoy districts. It is the main tower of Galata district walls which do not exist today. The first tower was built in 6th century B.C. out of wood. The surviving tower we see today was built by Genoesean people. In 16th century, the tower was also used as a dungeon for workers of Kasimpasa Dockyard, and had been turned into dockyard's warehouse later on. During the reign of Murat 3rd , the tower was also used as an observatory. Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi who is the first man to fly in the world has left Galata Tower for his swift flight in the air to land in Dogancilar. The tower has 16 stories and is 62 metres high together with its basement floor.
