The clock tower built in between the mosque and the sea in Izmir's famous Konak Square has become the city's symbol. It was built in 1901 by orders of Grand Vizier Kuciik Sait Pasha as a gift given to Abdulhamit 2nd on his 25th anniversary of his accession. The clock in the tower is also a gift sent by German Kaiser Wilhelm 2nd. The tower was known as Hamidiye Tower in that period. During Izmir's occupation, it is known that journalist Hasan Tahsin has fired the first bullet at occupying forces in front of this tower. |
