Mausoleum of Halikarnassos

Dated back to 4th century B.C., the monument is oen of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built in today's Bodrum to compete with the splendor of Egyptian Pyramids. It was built for the honor of Persian Governor Maussolos by his wife. After she was lao sburied in the same mausoleum, the sarcophagus part was locked with a special mechanism. The word mausoleum comes from the name of Persian Governor Maussolos. Mausoleum pieces are in display in the British Museum in London today.
