Rumli Fortress is built in 1452 with order from Mehmet 2nd the Conqueror to stop any support coming for Byzantium through the Bosphorus. The architect is Muslittin Bey and the construction is completed in such a short time of only 4 months. Approximate length of the fortress is 250 meters and the width changes between 50 and 125 meters. It dominates the Bosphorus with its three tower located at three corners. After the Conquest during when Yedikule Dungeons were being restored, it was also used as a prison only for a short while. There are cannons lasted from Mehmet the Conqueror's period, a minaret and a fountain ruin.The fortress is opened to public and visitors in 1958 under the name of Rumeli Fortress Museum and is being used as an open air theatre today as well. |
